Local Students Triumph in Competition to Design Bespoke Hoarding for One of London’s Landmark Developments
Two architecture students from London South Bank University (LSBU) have unveiled their unique hoarding design at Southbank Place, after winning a competition to transform the 13-metre stretch of Sutton Walk that borders the development site. Conceived of by Canary Wharf Group and Qatari Diar, joint developers of the mixed-used scheme situated on the site of the iconic Shell Centre, the competition is one of the many examples of the team’s strong emphasis on community engagement and championing of the local environment.
The winning pair, Muneeb Ali Khan and Daniel Tang produced a thought-provoking interactive design using inventive mirror angles to create an optical illusion that reflects life on London’s busy South Bank.
Speaking on behalf of the winning pair, Daniel Tang commented: “This project was a fantastic learning experience for Muneeb and I and really pushed our design abilities. We are delighted to have won the competition and create something that will be seen by so many people. Working closely with the Southbank Place team and with the help of the University’s Head of Architecture, Lilly Kudic, we wanted to design something that would reflect the positive impact this development will have on the local area, whilst catching pedestrians’ attention and interacting with them.”
Muneeb Ali Khan added: “The design was inspired by Rufus Butler Seder, whose eye-popping LIFETILES installations are featured across the world. Using a basic plywood structure, our main challenge was perfecting the intricate mirror angles to accurately reflect the passing pedestrian’s image all along the narrow walk way.”
Inspired by the 1963 film ‘A Look at Life’, released when the Shell Centre first opened and based on the daily activities of people working in the newly opened building, the aim of the competition was to create an engaging installation to reflect and celebrate how the local area has evolved through the years.
Commenting on behalf of the Southbank Place team, Khalil Ladki, Marketing Manager at Qatari Diar, said: “With Southbank Place, we had the opportunity to develop hoarding that is representative of our development. The competition was tough and attracted some of London’s most talented architecture students and we couldn’t be happier with the result. It’s a design that is truly inspired by SBP today and also its future.”
Manuela Zwingmann Wood, Group Marketing Manager at Canary Wharf Group added: “Quite often during the construction of a new development the hoarding will just supply basic information on the scheme, but we want Southbank Place to be different. This is a project recognising the value of the surrounding local area and we want our hoardings to give those that walk past a unique and memorable experience. This is exactly what Muneeb and Daniel’s design achieves.”
At the end of 2015, London South Bank University architecture students were invited to create and submit designs for an interactive hoarding at Southbank Place. Qatari Diar and Canary Wharf Group wanted students’ designs to showcase the prominence of the Shell Centre redevelopment in the heart of one of London’s most popular cultural districts. The winning hoarding design will be present during the construction period of Southbank Place, adding to the engaging and informative ‘Historical Timeline of the South Bank’ hoarding that currently borders the site and is scheduled to stay in situ until the end of the next academic year.
The unveiling of the hoardings comes after the recent launch of Belvedere Gardens, the third release of apartments in the sought after Southbank Place development. Opportunities to purchase these apartments became available on 29th September 2016.
