In Memory of Michael Squire 1946 – 2023

Michael Squire, the founding partner of London-based architecture practice Squire & Partners, and the architect behind much of the masterplan for Southbank Place, died on Thursday May 4, 2023. Under Michael’s direction Squire & Partner’s has become one of the UK’s most respected architecture practices, winning a significant number of design awards, and establishing a reputation for beautiful, crafted buildings in sensitive urban locations, with Southbank Place standing proudly among them.

One Casson Square and 30 Casson Square  represent a legacy of Michael’s work: his love of architecture, London, and his extraordinary vision as an architect. He sought to reinterpret the architectural language of London, ensuring each of his buildings were a welcome addition to the city. His architectural practice has changed much of the fabric of modern London, making a truly significant impact on this city he cherished dearly.

In a statement, the Squire & Partner’s said: ‘We are all in shock and still absorbing the loss of an extraordinary man, who touched the lives of so many around the world through his work as an architect and his warm and generous personality.’

At Qatari Diar and Canary Wharf we are deeply saddened by the loss of Michael Squire. One and Thirty Casson Square typify Michael’s approach to architecture, contemporary but contextual and sitting so comfortably within their surrounds, honouring London’s tradition of Portland Stone. A charming and incredibly warm and enthusiastic colleague, we are honoured to have worked with him and be the recipients of his once in a generation talent. His passing is a loss to the architectural world and to London.
